There are a variety of meanings to the word resilient. My personal research (doctoral dissertation) that I have conducted looked at a variety of factors that contributed to resiliency. One’s level of shame and/or guilt of their trauma has demonstrated to be the most significant factor impacting a person’s quality of life and level of resilience. Other significant factors that I have found in my research to impact resiliency level are: having hope quality of life will improve, sufficient self-esteem, appropriate level of assertive social skills in getting one’s needs met, healthy social support from friends and/or family, being resourceful, and skilled at problem-solving. -Dr. P
